âChloe, youâre back!â
Chloe turned around to see who had spoken, a little pleased that someone had been worried about her. Someone had noticed her absence and was relieved to see her back home unharmed.
But the woman who had spoken, Adele, was not smiling or looking pleased to see her.
âYeah, Iâm back,â Chloe agreed.
âYou need to keep us informed about your schedule. Where you are going and what you are doing. Who you are going to be with. Is that understood?â
Chloe dropped her eyes. âOkay. I didnât know.â
âI think you can figure out that you need to be responsible and keep us informed. Youâre not a child anymore, Chloe.â
Chloe hadnât been required to report her movements when she was a child. She took care of her responsibilities and her mother never asked for an accounting of the rest of her time.
âOkay,â she agreed.
âYou are here because you are in need of supervision. Youâre not ready to be on your own yet.â
âI know.â
âSo where were you?â Adele stepped closer to Chloe, staring directly into her eyes. Chloe stepped back, startled by the aggressive attitude. âWhat do you have to hide?â Adele challenged.
âNothing!â Chloe stepped back again, trying to preserve her personal space. Adele pursued her, backing her into the wall. She grasped Chloeâs chin and stared into her eyes. Then Adele finally released her and stepped back.
âIf you take drugs, I will know,â Adele warned.
âI didnât. I donât take drugs.â
âNot while youâre here, you donât. No addicts here.â
âIâm not.â
Adeleâs eyes flicked over her, and she smirked knowingly at Chloeâs thin body. âSure.â
Chloe turned away from her. âIâm not feeling good. Iâm going to bed.â
âWithdrawals?â
âNo. Iâm justâ¦â Chloe didnât want to have to explain why she was so thin and weak, what it was that she was recovering from. Social Services had promised not to give the group home details, to preserve Chloeâs privacy. She sighed and shook her head. âJust a bug, I guess.â
She could feel Adeleâs eyes on her all the way up the stairs. It was a relief to turn the corner and be out of sight.
Chloe went straight to her bed and didnât even bother to change out of her clothes. She was too exhausted. She just crawled in under the covers of the warm, soft bed, and closed her eyes.
